SOUTH HILLS INTERFAITH MINISTRIES (SHIM) IS A HUMAN SERVICES ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO REDUCING THE DEVASTATING EFFECTS OF INCREASING SUBURBAN POVERTY AMONG THE POOR, UNEMPLOYED, FAMILIES, SINGLE PARENTS, SENIOR CITIZENS, WOMEN, AND THE HIGH CONCENTRATION OF REFUGEE FAMILIES IN ITS SOUTH HILLS SERVICE AREA. SHIM WORKS TO IDENTIFY THE MOST CRITICAL NEEDS ACROSS THE SOUTH HILLS THEN DEVELOPS AND IMPLEMENTS EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS. SHIM AIMS TO EMPOWER INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES TO ACHIEVE STABILITY AND SELF-SUFFICIENCY BY OFFERING SHORT-TERM HELP WITH BASIC NEEDS (FOOD, CLOTHING, UTILITIES) AND LONGER-TERM SUPPORT PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN, FAMILIES AND ADULTS TO HELP THEM BUILD AND SUSTAIN PROMISING FUTURES. (SEE SCH O)SHIM OPERATES THREE FOOD PANTRIES THAT SUPPORT 1,700 INDIVIDUALS MONTHLY. WE DISTRIBUTE APPROXIMATELY 200,000 POUNDS OF FOOD, INCLUDING 10,848 POUNDS OF FRESH PRODUCE THAT IS GROWN IN 15 PARTNER GARDENS.SHIM DISTRIBUTED 30,527 ITEMS OF CLOTHING, INCLUDING WINTER COATS; TO THOSE IN NEED, BACKPACKS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES TO 1,114 CHILDREN; AND 587 GIFT CARDS WHICH WERE DISTRIBUTED TO FAMILIES TO DURING THE YEAR.SHIM IS A DOLLAR ENERGY SCREENING SITE, OFFERING ASSISTANCE TO INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES THAT HAVE FALLEN BEHIND ON THEIR UTILITY BILLS.
