The Zoo joined the International Species Inventory System in 1975 and began its first Species Survival Plan in 1982, which has grown to 21 cooperative breeding programs today. In 1985, the Erie Zoo was accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, successfully undergoing accreditation reviews every five years.
