About

Sherwood's Special Education program is a comprehensive full-day program for children K to age 21 that operates 220 days a year, including an eight-week extended term during the summer. It is funded through fees from public school districts for services provided to their students. The program serves students who have not found success in the traditional public school settings in the Kansas City Metro area. Many of the students referred to Sherwood have extreme behavioral challenges; for some this is their last option before a residential facility or hospital. Sherwood addresses their behavior, helps improve their social and communication skills, increases their ability to accomplish activities of daily living/basic hygiene, and works toward their long term goal of transitioning back to the public school system. Many of these students need long term services, staying 5-7 years before transitioning back to their public school or moving into adult services.
