Of all the work Esperanca conducts, none is more dramatic than the effect the medical teams (consisting of a minimum of a surgeon, nurse, and anesthesiologist) have on the lives of the families served through our volunteer surgical missions. Last year, Esperana sent nine volunteer surgical teams to Nicaragua and Peru. They performed 1,655 surgeries and consultations with an in-kind value of 2.88 million. Patients were treated for severe burns, cleft palates, injuries and deformities, goiters, hernias, tumors, gallbladders, and full range of OB-GYN needs. Critical medical supplies with an in-kind value of 1.82 million were shipped to local clinics and hospitals to provide life-saving assistance.
