I)Intensive Prevention Program (IPP) Serves students in grades 7-12 who have been suspended or expelled from school. Suspended students spend half of the day working on academics and tutoring assistance is available to keep them current with their classroom assignments. On-line education support is available for expelled students. During the remainder of the day the Life Skills Curriculum, an evidence-based program, is used to help the students change behaviors or actions that led to their suspensions/expulsions with an additional focus on ATOD prevention strategies. II)Positive Engagement Encouraging Resiliency in Shaker Students (PEERS) HS/MS This five-week summer program helps students develop a resiliency-based project using the Life Skills Curriculum that is adapted to meet the cultural requirements and community needs of Shaker Heights.PEERS students developed a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) plan for the Shaker Community through professional instruction from Case Western Reserve University. They solicited information from over 300 youth in the community in order to evaluate the challenges that needed to be addressed and the strengths that could be increased. Students also benefited from using the Social Norms Model, Resiliency Model and the Life Skills curriculum. III)MyCom Shaker Shaker is one of the original eight MyCom (My Commitment, My Neighborhood) neighborhoods. The Shaker Heights Youth Center is the lead MyCom agency for the Shaker community. MyCom neighborhoods assess youth needs, build capacity, plan, implement and evaluate programming to best meet those needs. Youth Leadership is the direct service component of MyCom & the Shaker Youth Council trains and mentors high school youth in leadership techniques & provides service learning opportunities. MYCom works with Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU) to expand the summer jobs program in order to help youth gain real world job skills. IV)School Based Student Assistance Program (SAP) High School Youth Center staff provide services at the Shaker Heights High School and interact closely with school personnel to identify youth in need of assistance in fulfilling their educational requirements. The Youth Center staff evaluates and supports students who are experiencing challenges that affect their ability to succeed academically. V)School Based Student Assistance Program (SAP) Middle School Shaker Heights Youth Center interacts closely with guidance counselors, assistant principals and teachers to identify youth in need of prevention services. The Youth Center staff member evaluates and supports students who are experiencing challenges that are negatively affecting their lives. VI)School Based Student Assistance Program (SAP) Woodbury Elementary School Shaker Youth Center staff works with students in grades 5 and 6. The staff member evaluates and supports the target population of students who are experiencing difficulties and challenges in their lives that are affecting their academic success and behavior in the school setting and/or community. VII)IMPACT Youth Enrichment Program The Youth Center, in collaboration with Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland, runs the Impact Youth Enrichment Program, which provides after school programming for Shaker Heights Middle School students. The focus is on increasing social skills, leadership and communication skills and academic competence which are proven to be significant protective factors. VIII)Girls Summer Leadership Camp for Shaker Students Grades 6-8 The focus of the camp is to build self-esteem, resiliency, personal leadership qualities through creative expression, physical activity, education and service-learning projects. The program uses the Life Skills model as its base and supplements it with related activities. IX)Student Mentoring Innovative Center for Personalized Learning The Shaker Heights Youth Center provides academic, behavioral and emotional support to students at the Innovative Center through a combination of academic assistance and the Life Skills curriculum. X)Foundations of Clinical Medicine The ADAMHS Board is committed to agencies addressing the opiate crisis. Our prevention program is aimed specifically at the root cause of the explosion in opiate addiction. One of the ways to combat it is to educate the next generation of physicians with accurate information on addiction.
