Mission

The Black Parent Initiative educates and mobilizes the parents and caregivers of black and multi-ethnic children to ensure they achieve success.

About

Community education, training and outreach. Focuses on literacy, culturally specific parenting and advocacy. BPI achieved these goals through our work with parents and students at three Portland public schools and through our sponsorship of a parent council focused on parent voice and advocacy. In addition, BPI held its annual book fair and sponsored a 'concert in the park' series for Portland parks and recreation. These activities support literacy and family/community connection, respectively. FY2018-2019 programming focused on student perspective. BPI held 17 student affinity groups with a total attendance of 48 students from February through June 2019; there were 7 parent groups offered with 11 parents receiving services. BPI facilitated the distribution of 316 culturally specific books to children and families through our book fair, annual holiday event and other avenues. 319 people attended the book fair and a total of 1483 attended the three-concert summer concert series. Additional outreach activities included attendance at 12 other community events where we reached at least 200 members of the public.
