About this organization
Mission
To restore and maintain 13 acres of historic landscape.
About
In 2018, Tregaron Conservancy focused on restoring, rehabilitating and maintaining its historic landscape, based on landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman's original vision for the property. The Conservancy's landscape work in 2018 included the following: restoring a historic footpath; maintaining and improving trails; planting predominantly-native trees, shrubs, flowers and ground cover in new Shipman-inspired wild gardens; clearing vines and invasive species; and addressing storm damage. Working with a renowned meadow designer, the Conservancy continued to implement its multi-year plan for native grass and wildflower meadows. The Conservancy also continued to analyze the health and condition of its trees, and its arborist and maintenance crew performed extensive tree care and pruning work. The Conservancy also continued to work with preservationists from the District of Columbia Office of Planning on excavation of century-old stone footpaths. All of the Conservancy's maintenance work was performed under staff supervision and pursuant to an annual maintenance calendar. The Conservancy made significant improvements in its communications, creating a new trail map, video, and print brochure. New wayfinding signs were also installed along the trails.During the summer, the Conservancy hosted middle school-aged campers from Horizons at Maret, a summer enrichment camp for under-resourced students. Throughout the year, Conservancy hosted students for recreation by our Lily Pond, hiking, outdoor education, art projects, and volunteer work.Hundreds of people from the Washington DC community attended the Conservancy's free events in 2018. The Conservancy hosted historical tours, expert-led bird walks, an arborist-led tour, and several lectures. The Conservancy also hosted volunteer clean-up and planting days, as well as other community-building events such as our annual Easter egg hunt.
