About this organization
Mission
To use sports and exercise to empower athletes of diverse socioeconomic physical or cognitive challenges.
About
In 2018, Empower Sports served over 700 athletes with special needs across 25 multi-week sports programs hosted in several venues around the greater Cleveland area. Our athletes are diverse- ranging in age from 5-adulthood and representing over 40 different cognitive, physical, hearing, visual and gross motor diagnoses. We are proud to have had the opportunity to create opportunities for our diverse groups to come together and share in year-round program opportunities. Our program offerings included basketball, soccer, softball, exercise classes, and more. Programs helped participants develop social skills, make new friends, exercise, and increase self-esteem through positive coaching and integration of typically-developing peers. Upon surveying our participating families, we found 90% felt the program helped improve social skills, and an even greater percentage of survey respondents indicated the program was a fun experience.
