Our mission is to increase justice in Georgia through law and policy reform and community engagement. Georgia Appleseed advances justice for all Georgia’s children, with a particular focus on children experiencing poverty, children with disabilities, and children who experience the effects of institutional bias and racism. 1) OUR DISMANTLING THE SCHOOL TO PRISON PIPELINE PROGRAM ENGAGES PARENTS, TEACHERS, LAWYERS, JUDGES, POLICY MAKERS, AND OTHER EXPERTS AND STAKEHOLDERS TO IDENTIFY AND SECURE NEEDED SUPPORTS FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN WITH BEHAVIOR AND LEARNING CHALLENGES, PARTICULARLY LOW-INCOME CHILDREN, THOSE WITH DISABILITIES, AND CHILDREN OF COLOR. SUPPORTED CHILDREN ARE MORE LIKELY TO STAY IN SCHOOL, AND LESS LIKELY TO ENTER THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. WE ALSO REFER CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE FACING LONG-TERM SUSPENSION OR EXPULSION TO ATTORNEYS WILLING TO REPRESENT THEM, OR WE REPRESENT THEM OURSELVES. LEGAL REPRESENTATION PROTECTS THESE CHILDRENS RIGHTS, KEEPS THEM IN SCHOOL, AND INCREASES THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACCESS NECESSARY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SUPPORTS. 2) HEALTHY HOUSING: OUR HEALTHY HOUSING PROGRAM ENGAGES FAMILIES, LANDLORDS, DEVELOPERS, LAWYERS, JUDGES, POLICY MAKERS, AND OTHER EXPERTS AND STAKEHOLDERS TO IDENTIFY AND SECURE NEEDED REFORMS TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO SAFE, AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES. CHILDREN LIVING IN UNSAFE HOUSING CONDITIONS ARE MORE LIKELY TO SUFFER FROM CHRONIC RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES, AND EXPERIENCE HOUSING INSTABILITY. THESE CHILDREN MORE OFTEN CHANGE SCHOOLS, DO MORE POORLY ON STANDARDIZED TESTS, AND HAVE LOWER GRADUATION RATES.
