Mission

TO ENGAGE AND EMPOWER PEOPLE TO ELIMINATE ILLEGAL DUMPING & LITTERING IN ALLEGHENY COUNTY

About

CLEAN UPS ON LAND: LAND-BASED CLEAN UPS MAY BE ON ROADSIDES, ALLEYS, VACANT LOTS, & HILL SIDES. SINCE 2010, ALLEGHENY CLEANWAYS (ACW) HAS OPERATED A PROGRAM CALLED "DUMPBUSTERS." DUMPBUSTER CREWS CLEAN UP ILLEGAL DUMP SITES NEARLY EVERY DAY, YEAR-ROUND. CREWS ARE MADE UP OF SMALL, EFFICIENT TEAMS OF ACW STAFF & TRAINED VOLUNTEERS WHO WORK SIDE BY SIDE TO TACKLE ILLEGAL DUMPS OF ALL SIZES, REMOVING AN AVERAGE OF 900-1,200 POUNDS OF DEBRIS DAILY. THE DUMPSTER CREWS ALSO PROVIDE EXPERTISE TO COMMUNITIES WANTING TO CLEAN UP DIFFICULT SITES & ASSIST IN LARGE COMMUNITY EVENTS BY DOING PREP WORK AND/OR RETURNING TO THE SITE TO FINISH THE JOB, IF NEEDED. ACW ALSO HOSTS LARGE CLEAN UP EVENTS PERIODICALLY THROUGHOUT THE SPRING, SUMMER & FALL. THESE EVENTS ENGAGE A LARGE GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS TO CLEAN UP PARTICULARLY LARGE OR DIFFICULT DUMP SITES. OFTEN CORPORATIONS & COMMUNITY GROUPS APPROACH US LOOKING FOR A MEANINGFUL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY FOR THEIR CONSTITUENTS. THE WORK ACW DOES TO REMOVE DEBRIS FROM THE REGION'S HILLSIDES, OPEN LOTS, & GREENWAYS IS THE FIRST CRUCIAL STEP TO FULL RESTORATION OF THE VALUABLE GREEN SPACES THAT DEFINE THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH. WHEN POSSIBLE, ACW WORKS WITH THE ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE A BROADER RESTORATION GOAL IN MIND FOR THE SITE AFTER THE CLEAN UP, SUCH AS A TRAIL OF A GARDEN. WHEN THERE IS NO SPECIFIC GOAL FOR THE LAND, ACW WORKS WITH LOCAL RESIDENTS TO STEWARD & RESTORE THE SITE TO ITS NATURAL STATE.
