Mission

Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA) is a grassroots organization of Latina immigrant women with a dual mission of promoting personal transformation and building community power for social and economic justice.  We achieve our mission by: Creating an environment of understanding and confidentiality Empowering and educating our members to provide mutual support Offering trainings to build economic security and leadership Working in diverse alliances on the local, regional, national, and international levels Organizing campaigns to win immigrant, workers' and women's rights.

About

Direct Social Services: MUA offered a variety of direct services, such as peer-based and professional therapy, referrals and accompaniment to community partners and resources, support groups, educational workshops, domestic violence and sexual assault crisis counseling and intervention services, and opportunities to improve mental health and well-being to Latina immigrant women and their families in San Francisco, Oakland, and South Alameda County in 2018. Over 500 women received support via group meetings, with over 400 attending meetings on an ongoing basis. In addition to our support group meetings, we provided individualized peer counseling to over 260 women, attending over 80 calls on our sexual assault crisis line, and conducted group coaching with 44 women. At least 200 Latina immigrants received access medical, legal, social service, housing and other resources in 2018 that they wouldn't have otherwise because of the referrals and support provided by MUA. MUA trained 24 state-certified domestic violence advocates, maintained certification for 22 sexual assault crisis counselors, and prepared 19 newer members to be peer counselors. MUA continued our partnership with Rubys Place in Hayward to bring our innovative peer support model into their domestic violence shelter. We consolidated our two south Alameda County pilot projects in Hayward and Fremont into a larger and more stable program in Union City in collaboration with the Union City Family Center and the New Haven Unified School District. MUA also co-organized the Si Se Puede domestic violence education and awareness conference in San Francisco in collaboration with Homeless Prenatal Project and Good Samaritan Resource Center.
