PROFESSIONAL ENSEMBLE THEATRE COMPANY

About

THE NOLA PROJECT'S 2017-2018 SEASON, THE COMPANY'S 13TH, WAS A SUCCESSFUL AND ARTISTICALLY AMBITIOUS SEASON, MARKED BY WORLD PREMIERES, IMMERSIVE AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT, AND NATIONAL RECOGNITION. IN OCTOBER 2017, THE COMPANY WAS AWARDED WITH A SECOND NATIONAL THEATRE COMPANY AWARD BY THE AMERICAN THEATRE WING, PRODUCERS OF THE ANNUAL TONY AWARDS. THE NOLA PROJECT IS ONE OF A SMALL HANDFUL OF THEATRE ORGANIZATIONS TO EVER BE AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED PRIZE TWICE, AND TWICE IN A THREE YEAR TIME SPAN NO LESS! THE COMPANY BEGAN ITS SEASON WITH THE MOUNTING OF THE COMPANY'S SECOND-EVER MUSICAL: URINETOWN, A CO-PRODUCTION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS. THE PRODUCTION RECEIVED WARM REVIEWS AND WAS NOMINATED FOR SEVERAL BIG EASY THEATRE AWARDS. THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTION, MEN ON BOATS BY JACLYN BACKHAUS, FEATURED AN ALL-FEMALE CAST, CREW, AND DESIGN TEAM AND WAS PRESENTED AS A REGIONAL PREMIERE IN THE LUSHER LIONS GATE THEATRE AND DIRECTED BY NYC-BASED DIRECTOR SHANNON SINDELAR. THE COMPANY FOLLOWED THIS WITH ITS ANNUAL OUTDOOR PRODUCTION IN THE NEW ORLEANS MUSEUM OF ART'S BESTHOFF SCULPTURE GARDEN. IN MAY 2018, THE COMPANY OPENED THIS WORLD PREMIERE PRODUCTION OF THE SPIDER QUEEN BY JAMES BARTELLE AND ALEX MARTINEZ WALLACE. THE PLAY FEATURED AN IMMENSE CAST AND LARGE SCALE PUPPETRY SUCH AS THE NOLA PROJECT HAS NEVER BEFORE PRESENTED. AS SUCH, THE PRODUCTION BROKE PERFORMANCE ATTENDANCE RECORDS FOR THE SCULPTURE GARDEN, WAS ATTENDED BY OVER 2500 NEW ORLEANIANS, AND ENDED UP WINNING THE BEST ORIGINAL WORK OF THEATRE AWARD AT THE BIG EASY THEATRE AWARDS. THE FINAL PRODUCTION OF THE 2017-2018 SEASON WAS ANOTHER WORLD PREMIERE, TALKBACK, WRITTEN BY ANDREW LARIMER AND CHRISTOPHER KAMINSTEIN. TALKBACK WAS UNIQUE IN THAT IT PRESENTED AN IMMERSIVE PLAY THAT HEAVILY INVOLVED AUDIENCE MEMBERS ASKING QUESTIONS OF THE CAST WHO WOULD THEN INCORPORATE THE QUESTIONS INTO THEIR PERFORMANCE. THE WORK WAS TOURED TO THREE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS AROUND THE NEW ORLEANS AREA, EACH FOCUSED ON BRINGING IN A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD AUDIENCE. THE SEASON CONCLUDED IN JUNE OF 2018.
