WEI AT AMADOR HILL IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH, RENEWAL AND RETREAT CENTER DESIGNED TO CREATE AND SHARE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND POLICIES RELEVANT TO WOMEN, CHILDREN AND IDENTIFIED COMMUNITIES ESPECIALLY AFFECTED BY ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICES; TO PROMOTE ORGANIC AND SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE SKILL BUILDING AND ECOLOGICAL AWARENESS; AND TO SUPPORT ACTIVISM THAT INFLUENCES PUBLIC POLICY AND SUPPORTS SOCIAL CHANGE.

WEI CONTINUED TO SUPPORT OUR URBAN FARMING PARTNERS, INCLUDING MASHKIIKII GITGIGAN, LITTLE EARTH OF UNITED TRIBES, AND THE INDOOR URBAN FARM PROJECT TO BE SITED AT THE FORMER ROOF DEPOT. AT MASHKIIKII GITIGAN (OJIBWAY FOR MEDICINE GARDEN): WEI TRANSITIONED ITS FISCAL AGENCY ROLE TO THE NATIVE AMERICAN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE (NACDI) WHILE CONTINUING TO SERVE AS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE 24TH ST. URBAN FARM COALITION WHICH PROVIDES ONGOING OVERALL DIRECTION TO MASHKIIKII'S THREE SITES. OUR LEAD FARMER JOINED THE WAITE HOUSE STAFF BUT CONTINUED DIRECTING THE CHICAGO AVE. SITE 2'S RESEARCH ON LEAD IN SOIL AND IN PLANT REMEDIATION; THE ORIGINAL 24TH ST. SITE FOCUSED MORE EXCLUSIVELY ON NATIVE MEDICINAL PLANT; WHILE SITE 3, WITH TWO HOOP HOUSES, DEVELOPED VEGETABLE PRODUCTION FOR SALE TO WAITE HOUSE AND THE FOUR SISTERS FARMER'S MARKET. AT LITTLE EARTH OF UNITED TRIBES URBAN FARM: WEI CONTINUED TO OFFER EDUCATION AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES TO BOTH ADULTS AND YOUTH--SPECIFICALLY ENGAGING THE LEOUT YOUTH IN WEI'S ANNUAL FARMER TRAINING WITH WILL ALLEN, WHERE THEY HELPED CONSTRUCT A NEW HOOP HOUSE NEXT TO WEI'S PROCESSING BARN. AT THE INDOOR URBAN FARM PROJECT'S FORMER ROOF DEPOT SITE: WEI'S ROLE WAS LIMITED TO PROMOTION AND GUIDANCE. THIS COMMUNITY-LED PROJECT IN THE SOUTH SIDE GREEN ZONE DEVELOPED MORE FULLY WITH VOLUNTEERS AND USED ITS STATE DEED FUNDING TO DEVELOP ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS AND SPONSOR COMMUNITY ORGANIZING FOR A 3 ACRE, YEAR-ROUND INDOOR URBAN FARM THAT WOULD INCLUDE BOTH HIGH-TECH AND LOW-TECH AQUAPONICS; LIVING WAGE GREEN JOBS AND JOB TRAINING; 28 UNITS OF HOUSING AFFORDABLE TO VERY LOW INCOME FAMILIES; ENTREPRENEURIAL BUSINESS INCUBATOR OPPORTUNITIES FOR LITTLE EARTH OF UNITED TRIBES, TAMALES Y BICICLETAS, SOUTHEAST SOMALI HOMES, A YOUTH-LED WORLD CAF AND OTHER EAST PHILLIPS IMPROVEMENT COALITION PARTICIPANTS; PLUS CULTURAL FOOD AND CRAFT MARKETS REFLECTING THE NEIGHBORHOOD'S DIVERSITY. SOLAR ROOFS AND OUTDOOR COMMUNITY FARMING SPACE WERE ALSO DESIGNED. THE MINNEAPOLIS CITY COUNCIL DID NOT SUPPORT THE ENTIRE PROJECT, BUT AT YEAR'S END THEY DID AGREE TO CONSIDER OTHER SCALED DOWN VERSIONS AND TO APPOINT AN EAST PHILLIPS COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO REVIEW THE CITY'S ALTERNATIVE PLANS. WEI CONTINUED SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY'S APPROACH.
