Our mission is to advance children's literacy skills using an engaging curriculum, dedicated volunteers and certified dogs. We serve low-income communities in Chicago and go into Chicago Public Schools that have populations that are at least 88% low-income with over 70% of third graders reading below grade level*. *Based on Chicago Public School data from 2016-17

The program provides literacy services to children from low-income households in Chicago Public Schools at no cost to the parents or schools. The mission is to advance children's literacy skills using an engaging curriculum, certified dogs, and dedicated volunteers. During 2018-2019, SitStayRead's 16th year, with the help of 243 human and 70 canine volunteers, SitStayRead served 2,283 students in 94 classrooms through four different grade-level programs in 18 Chicago Public Schools. SitStayRead also participated in community programs and events, serving around 350 additional students for a total of 2,633 students. Dogs enable the organization to tackle the serious issue of childhood literacy in a fun and engaging way.
