Mission

Heroes on the Water's mission is to help warriors relax and reconnect through kayak fishing and the outdoors.

About

In 2019, our chapters located throughout the United States serviced 5,799 veterans and first responders through our therapeutic kayak fishing experiences. These events are held in various chapters led by volunteers monthly during the kayak fishing season. Typical events are held on a Saturday, typically half a day, and include lunch. The benefits of these outings far exceed a simple kayak fishing excursion. They promote healing through camaraderie with like-minded people who know how difficult it is to reintegrate into civilian life. As one of the few veteran's service organizations that include families, our chapters served 1,561 family members in 2019. These members are included in our excursions as they desire, whether that is to experience kayak fishing or enjoy the camaraderie of other family members at the event. The family members are invited to both heal and support the healing of their loved ones. Chapters are led and managed by a volunteer team. These opportunities run from leadership teams to providing safety briefings to prepping and serving food at events. Veterans and first responders who participate in our outings and then move into a volunteer position show a trajectory of healing that supports reintegration into civilian life. Our experience is that volunteers are better prepared to enter the job market and participate more actively in their lives.
