Mission

The mission of Friends of ETC Group is to protect biodiversity and to advance the creation of a just and sustainable food security and sustainable livelihood system for the benefit of rural areas and societies.

About

The Organization works toward the goals outlined in its mission largely through educational activities and by supporting the work of Action Group on Erosion, Technology and Concentration (ETC Group), a charitable organization headquartered in Canada, and by supporting the work of other organizations aligned with its charitable and educational aims.In the last year, The Organization continued its double focus on the very small and the very large that is, advocacy and education related to sustainable, smallholder food production on the one hand; and, on the other hand, educating the public and policymakers about new technologies with potentially dramatic and large-scale social, economic and environmental effects (for example, synthetic biology, geoengineering and big data). Over the last several years, The Organization has broadened its support of ETC Groups research to assess the potential threat of synthetic biology on agriculture and has provided targeted support for additional, case-study research on the potential impact of synthetic biologys production techniques including the use of so-called gene drives on agricultural production by smallholder farmers. The Organization has built on the success of that work with continued public support with a grant from the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, Marin Community Foundation and others. These grants, and others continue to help ETC Group maintain a public database to track commercial products that have been produced using synthetic biology techniques; those products are intended to compete with and potentially supplant natural products already on the market, most of which are grown and harvested by small farmers and rural workers. In the past fiscal year, we have also increased our efforts to address the potential threats and impacts of geoengineering experiments on communities, and to advance international policy to address the governance of geoengineering. The Organization has directly participated in educational events, such as trainings and webinars for community-based organizations, as well as partnering with ETC Group, Biofuels Watch, Climate Justice Alliance and others to address these issues through reports, trainings and activities in international fora, such as The Convention on Biological Diversity and the United National Framework Convention on Climate Change. The organizations with which The Organization and ETC Group have collaborated for more than a decade in Mexico, members of the Maize Network, continued their education and engagement activities throughout the fiscal year. With the support of The Organization, CECCAM, a Maize Network member and not-for-profit organization based in Mexico, produced deep analysis and prospective on the history of transgenic crops in Mexico, that was later shared among several peasant organizations and communities, as well as educational centers throughout the country. CECCAM has been key in maintaining the countrys prohibition on the planting and commercialization of transgenic corn. Also in line with advancing the creation of just and sustainable food security, The Organization also partnered with UNAC in Mozambique, to provide agroecological training for small farmers and community members. With the financial and technical support of The Organization, ETC Group was able to advance its longstanding work to facilitate participatory technology assessment. With targeted grant funds from the Marin Community Foundation, ETC Group, with its international partners, continue to maintain the Technology Assessment Platform (TAP) in Latin America. The Second General Assembly of the Latin America process TECLA Network was held this fiscal year in Mexico City. At this meeting, the General Assembly reviewed and evaluated the accomplishments of the network and made new commitments outlined, for which we will continue to raise resources, as this is considered a key initiative in Latin America. The Asia Pacific TAP continued organizing discussions around the next steps towards consolidation and formation of the Asia Pacific TAP process. This work continued this fiscal year and will continue into the future. Also this year, there was work to establish an Africa TAP process through initial gatherings in Lamu, Nigeria, and during the 3rd Science, Technolgoy and Innovation Forum in New York City, where TECLA, Tal Africa and the TAP Asia-Pacific participated. ETC Group, with support from The Organization, brought forward concerns about transparency and accountability in the gene-drive mosquito project called Target Malaria from communities in West Africa.
