Mission

Since 1975, Usenix, the Advanced Computing Systems Association, has brought together the community of engineers, system administrators, scientists, and technicians working on the cutting edge of the computing world. The Usenix conferences have become the essential meeting grounds for the presentation and discussion of the most advanced information on the developments of all aspects of computing systems. The mission of Usenix is to foster technical excellence and innovation, support and disseminate research with a practical bias, provide a neutral forum for discussion of technical issues, and encourage computing outreach into the community at large.

About

Each year, Usenix organizes approximately 12 major technical conferences as well as workshops on advanced computing systems topics. We also administer diversity and student grants to encourage conference attendance by these communities. Usenix promotes research and practice in advanced computing systems by publishing research and organizing conferences that foster the exchange of information. Research papers and conference recordings are freely distributed due to our 'open access' policy, by which we make them available at no charge to the public. In 2018, Usenix organized the following conferences, which included subjects related to security; system administration; cloud and storage technologies; networked and operating systems design and implementation; and site reliability engineering. Numerous summits, workshops, and symposia were co-located with the following events: Enigma 2018 conference, 16th Usenix conference on file and storage technologies (FAST '18), SREcon18 Americas, 15th Usenix symposium on networked system design and implementation (NSDI '18), SREcon18 Asia/Australia, 2018 Usenix annual technical conference (ATC '18), Fourteenth symposium on usable privacy and security (SOUPS '18), 27th Usenix security symposium and workshops (Usenix Security '18), SREcon18 Europe/Middle East/Africa, 2018 Usenix security and AI networking conference (SCAINET '18), 13th Usenix symposium on operating systems design and implementation (OSDI '18), 32nd large installation system administration conference (LISA18). Usenix has two grant programs. The student grant program enables full-time students to attend Usenix conferences, workshops, and symposia by assisting with travel, hotel and registration expenses. In 2018, awards were given to 196 students from a variety of different institutions. Since 1990, this program has made over 4,552 awards. Student authors submitting technical papers are eligible for best paper awards. The diversity grant program supports travel expenses and/or event registration fees, and is designed to support the participation of equal representation for underrepresented groups in the field. In 2018, Usenix awarded 87 diversity grants. Grant recipients are selected based on their involvement in the particular field, the strength of their application essay, and availability of funds.
