About

The Aspira Youth Leadership Development and Drop-out Prevention Program consists of multiple learning processes including educating youth and parents on the following: Financial Education Project - This project was implemented by organizing the community in order to identify its problems (e.g., economic, health, housing, employment, etc.); fight for recognition and representation in the political process; advocate against individual and group incidents of institutional racism and discrimination; and develop a positive identity through the preservation of the Puerto Rican and Latino culture, language, and history. The project also seeks to develop an informed and committed leadership that will advocate for improving the quality of life for members of the community. Web-based Learning Facility Project - Aspira implemented a national computer literacy and broadband adoption campaign in Latino communities. This initiative provides students and parents/caregivers the tools, including curriculum materials and online workshops and courses, to become computer literate. It also provides information on the importance of broadband adoption to enhance the educational attainment of Latino youth. Aspira Parents for Educational Excellence Project (APEX) - The mission of this project is to increase the involvement of Latino parents in their children's education by helping them learn about the intricacies of negotiating change and improving education in their communities. The APEX curriculum has served as a model project in the area of community empowerment through parental involvement. Health Education Project - Hispanic Americans face significant challenges in attaining better healthcare, specifically in the areas of substance abuse and mental health. To address these needs, Aspira implemented health education in the Youth Leadership Development Clubs to encourages Latino youth to pursue careers in these fields and to make a difference by responding to the healthcare needs of their communities. Aspira has expanded its Health Education Project by developing an HIV/AIDS prevention communications campaign to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS within the Latino community as part of the Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative (AAALI). AAALI is a partnership of leading national organizations designed to increase HIV prevention efforts in communities hardest hit by the disease. Supported by the Potomac Health Foundation, Aspira and the Hispanic Organization for Leadership and Action work together to promote a healthy lifestyle in the Prince William County area. This project focuses on addressing the prevalence of obesity and diabetes, and educating Latino youth and community on the importance of healthy eating and exercise. Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Project - As part of the learning process, participants of the Aspira clubs engage in activities to understand the importance of using safety restraints and becoming familiar with traffic laws in D.C. The purpose of this project is to significantly reduce injuries and fatalities from car crashes, improve driver behavior, and enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety. Public Policy - Aspira has promoted changes in public policies to benefit Hispanic youth and communities. As an organization dedicated exclusively to education, its advocacy and policy initiatives have focused mainly on education and issues that affect Hispanic youth. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) - The STEM project focuses on implementing Children Investigating Science with Parents and Afterschool (CHISPA) in collaboration with the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, and Unidos US. These groups work with a network of ten science museums located in cities with growing Latino populations, working together to build stronger communities and increase the engagement of Hispanic children and their families with science and local science resources.
