About
The library and historical collections can be seen in Schedule O. The academy library has been serving the public since 1878 with access to its broad-ranging health and medical collections. Its services include supporting users' research, and mounting tours, classes, workshops, and cultural programming for the public. The library contains about 550,000 volumes, including 32,000 rare books, and an extensive collection of books and journals in the history of medicine. Archives, manuscripts, pamphlets, and various ephemeral materials also form part of the historical collections. The center for the history of medicine and public health is the library's programming arm. A major library activity in 2018 was its work on Germ City: Microbes and the Metropolis, an exhibition that the academy co-curated with the Museum of the City of New York and the Wellcome Trust. The exhibition opened on September 14th at the museum and remained up through April 28th, 2019. Germ City explored the story of New York's long battle against infectious disease - a fight involving government, urban planners, medical professionals, businesses, and activists, revealing how disease has changed us physically, socially, and culturally. The academy took the lead in developing the exhibition programming, which included four panel discussions - two in 2018 and two in 2019 - as well as walking tours in New York. In all, in 2018 the center mounted 26 events, reaching 1,450 attendees, as well as presenting 115 tours, workshops, and classes to over 900 participants. These activities included a gallery talk at the Grey Gallery of NYU in connection with their winter 2018 exhibition, 'The Beautiful Brain: The Drawings of Santiago Ramn y Cajal,' for which we loaned 10 books, placed in juxtaposition with approximately 80 of Cajal's drawings. Another notable exhibition loan was an eighteenth-century surgical kit provided to the Morgan Library & Museum for its fall 2018 exhibition, 'It's Alive! Frankenstein at 200.' In January 2018, the library released one of its most significant digital projects: 'Facendo Il Libro: The Making of Fasciculus Medicinae, an Early Printed Anatomy.' With funding from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, the library digitized its five print editions of Fasciculus Medicinae dating from 1495 to 1522. In addition to providing full-text digital facsimiles, the site focused on the editions' changing illustrations. Expert commentary discussed the books and their context of early printing in Venice. In spring 2019 the site won the online publication award of the Archivists and Librarians in the History of the Health Sciences. In addition, the library digitized its William S. Ladd collection of prints through a grant from the Metropolitan New York Library Council (Metro). The collection consists of 671 prints, primarily portraits, dating from the 17th through the early 19th centuries.
