Mission
The mission of MacDowell is to nurture the arts by offering creative individuals an inspiring environment in which they can produce enduring works of the imagination. Our admissions philosophy is that residencies are offered based on commitment to artistic practice demonstrated by work samples and the clarity of purpose expressed in applicants' project descriptions, rather than reputation or past achievements. Our ongoing outreach efforts seek to inform and encourage any artist to apply to MacDowell.
About
Artists in residence receive room, board, and exclusive use of a studio for up to two months. Application is open to all. The sole criterion for acceptance is talent. Artists are selected from the widest possible range of perspective and demographics. All artists are eligible for travel grants to come to MacDowell; awards are based on financial need. Financial aid based on need is also available. Through education and community benefit programs, publication, presentations and other activities, the MacDowell Colony increases understanding and appreciation of the arts and its value to the public. The MacDowell Colony was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1997 for 'nurturing & inspiring many of the century's finest artists'.
