About
Choral music education and performance: The Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy (BYC) provided comprehensive music education of unparalleled quality to a diverse group of 674 NYC young people during 2017-18. Music education: From September through May, 575 students aged 7-21 studied and performed in choral divisions grouped by age, and then by skill and experience. Training took place at Brooklyn Youth Chorus' downtown Brooklyn facility and at our neighborhood expansion program sites in Bedford Stuyvesant and Red Hook. Participation was as follows: Prep division (209 choristers ages 7-9 in 2 levels/ 7 sections; 1 hr/wk); Pre-teen division (193 choristers ages 10-12 in 3 levels/6 sections; 1.5-2 hrs/wk); Teen division (55 choristers ages 14-18/2 sections; 2 hrs/wk); Men's training division (6 choristers ages 10-13; 1.5 hrs/wk); Men's ensemble (23 choristers ages 13-21; 2 hrs/wk); Junior ensemble (43 choristers ages 11-18; 18 hours/mo); and Concert ensemble (47 choristers ages 11-18; 22.5 hrs/mo, with extensive additional rehearsals for concerts). Two prep sections and two pre-teen sections met weekly at the Bedford Stuyvesant and Red Hook locations. An additional 99 students were served through our school-based partnership programs at P.S. 1, and P.S. 94 in Sunset Park and Excellence Charter School in Bedford Stuyvesant, meeting weekly for full or partial school-year programs. Weekly after-school and Saturday elective classes included private voice, piano, and guitar lessons and high school and middle school audition preparation group classes. Brooklyn Youth Chorus conducted year-end assessments (sight singing, ear training, written musicianship test, and vocal assessment); the majority of choristers showed significant year-end improvement from the prior year's baseline results. Students epitomized the diversity of NYC: 52% of BYC's students were non-white, including 22% African-American, 16% Hispanic, and 14% Asian-American. Students hailed from 71 NYC zip codes (including East New York, Sheepshead Bay, Lower Manhattan and Staten Island), and attended 126 public and independent schools. Over 35% came from extremely low, very low or low-income households according to HUD. Tuition was $1,000-$1,795 per year, a subsidized rate as the program costs $3,400/year per student. 35% of our students received over $278,000 in financial aid and tuition subsidy. BYC also provided fully-subsidized school-based programs at three schools serving 99 students for which no tuition was charged. Through our in-school partnerships and neighborhood expansion program, BYC reached low-income students and offered guaranteed aid to choristers from underserved communities. Performances, commissions and productions: BYC's three performing ensembles served NYC audiences of 25,000 in 2017-18 with 28 concerts at venues ranging from parks and public schools to New York Public Radio's The Greene Space and and Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall. Highlights include: September 29-October 1, 2017, Concert ensemble performed Black Mountain Songs, commissioned and produced by BAM and Brooklyn Youth Chorus and curated by Bryce Dessner and Richard Reed Parry, at North Carolina's Black Mountain College. November 9-14, 2017, Concert ensemble performed with the New York Philharmonic, led by Leonard Slatkin, in the finale of their Bernstein's Philharmonic: A Centennial Festival, Bernstein's Symphony No. 3 Kaddish. January 31, 2018-February 3, 2018, Concert ensemble and Men's ensemble performed with the New York Philharmonic as part of their Young People's Concert and their six Young People's Concerts for Schools on the theme of 'Inspirations and Tributes: An African American Lineage.' February 16, 2018, Junior ensemble performed in the world premiere of composer William Brittelle's song cycle Spiritual America at Symphony Space, NYC, exploring the never-ending search for meaning in our lives through a stunning mix of classical, electronic, and rock music, featuring Brooklyn Youth Chorus, indie-duo Wye Oak and NYC's award-winning Metropolis Ensemble. In June they participated in a recording session for an upcoming album of the work to be released spring 2019. April 27-28, 2018, Concert ensemble premiered Silent Voices: If You Listen at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NY. Eight composers, all women, collaborated with choristers to amplify marginalized stories and voices and activate young people as agents of change. To that end, If You Listen featured the choristers' own words, evinced through extensive discussions and interviews about their experiences, their power/privilege or lack thereof, and their community responsibility.
