Mission

Founded in 1986, City Lore’s mission is to foster New York City – and America’s – living cultural heritage through education and public programs. We are a cultural center dedicated to documenting, presenting, and advocating for New York City’s grassroots cultures to ensure their living legacy in stories and histories, places and traditions. We work in four cultural domains: urban folklore and history; preservation; arts education; and grassroots poetry traditions. In each of these realms, we see ourselves as furthering cultural equity and modelling a better world with projects as dynamic and diverse as New York City itself.

About

In 2018, City Lore continued to further its mission to foster New York City and America's living cultural heritage through education and public programs. Our in-school programs reached over 5,000 public school students with long term arts residencies, and our after-school programs included the special initiative called Roots, Routes & Rhythms funded by the U.S. Department of Education to our partnering community school district 30. Both teachers and students are taught to trace and digitally map the roots of the music students are listening to today. Our public exhibits included What We Bring: New Immigrant Gifts and a Yiddish folk and visual arts show that was part of a city-wide festival. More than 40 public performances, discussions and screenings were hosted in our gallery/community center at 56 E. First Street as well as at the Bronx Music Heritage Lab that City Lore helps to curate. City Lore also ran a national institute for teachers from across the U.S. called A Reference for Words focusing on Muslim poetry and art. Public programs included Verbal Duels: Sheyr Jangi, in which four poets celebrated the Afghan tradition of the poetic duel and Sufi Songs: Crosscurrents in Persian and Turkish classical music and poetry with Amir Vahab & Ensemble.
