About

Community SchoolsEl Puente Community School serves all MS50 students (~325 students) through the utilization of the community school strategy to create universal supports and enrichment activities, and also provides targeted/intensive services to students (and their families) who fall in one or more of the following categories: Are chronically absent from school Are chronically late to school Are frequently cited for behavioral infractions and/or suspensions Are new immigrants/English Language Learners (ELLs) who need cultural, as well as academic transition supportAttendance improvement activities are based on qualitative/quantitative data and an approach rooted in community & family connectedness (ex. 1-on-1 students and/or family mentoring, home visits, parent conferences, incentive programs). We currently serve 60 students through the Success Mentoring program that specifically targets chronically late and absent students. Since establishing El Puente Community Schools, yearly attendance at MS50 has risen from 89% to 93% and chronic absenteeism has been reduced by 50%.Family Engagement activities supports MS50 staff in creating authentic relationships with their students families as decision-making partners, through educational/vocational workshops, family support services, & culturally/linguistically relevant enrichment programming. Our program also provides leadership development sessions to prepare parents to take on leadership roles in and through the PTA and School Leadership Team, as well as enrichment parent workshops to include: fitness, nutrition & wellness, ESL/GED and job training/skill building. About 80% of our parents have attended at least 1 workshop, event and/or program in the past year. Academic Support activities include the implementation of El Puentes Integrated Arts Project model, a dynamic, in-depth learning process that brings teachers and teaching artists together in collaborative partnership to create integrated academic experiences around a central theme, vision, or community issue to motivate academic engagement and achievement. This model has been tailored in the past few years to support MS50s English Language Learners and students with special needs. Our DRP (reading comprehension ) scores show that we outperformed the national average as well as other MSQI schools for all grades. The math state test data showed that we also performed close to the city average. Every year, our academic achievement continues to show gains. The Community School strategy is embedded in all facets of school programming and structures including school culture, college programming, and student leadership. Other highlights include our work to shift school culture to be more culturally relevant for students; college visits & programming for all students and a robust student government with 50 members. (specific to last year) 2017-2018 was a great year at MS 50! Our accomplishments include:*Establishing and expanding innovative and asset-based programs such as College Access for All, Success Mentors and Integrated Arts Project*Winning the Citywide Debate Championships for the third year in a row,*Becoming an NYC DOE Showcase School *We also saw gains in both ELA and math test scores. In ELA students scores rose by 12 percentage points! All of this great work and accomplishments led to a shout out by the NYCDOE Chancellor in a Daily News Op-Ed as well as recognition in multiple news outlets.
