About
New Samaritan Corporation (NSC) advocates for human dignity primarily by encouraging, providing and developing affordable, accessible, high-quality housing and healthcare facilities. NSC's values include (1) empowerment of individuals and communities, (2) shared and transparent decision making, imaginative leadership and organizational development, and (4) ethical business practices. Since its founding in 1970, NSC has developed primarily Connecticut housing communities for elderly and disabled individuals, as well as low and moderate income families. NSC has also developed housing in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. As the largest non-profit provider of housing in CT, NSC provides thousands of housing units. All NSC sponsored housing facilities are owned by non-profit corporations, towns or residents' associations. NSC's most recently developed community is located in Old Saybrook, CT and provides 15 units of affordable elderly housing to the community. Future development projects are considered based on a variety of factors, including building communities 'where dignity and compassion come home.' NSC also owns and operates a 98-bed skilled nursing facility, Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation (MCNR) in Storrs, CT. MCNR is part of a larger campus of senior services that are sponsored by New Samaritan or owned and managed by the town of Mansfield. Consequently many of MCNR's residents, patients and visitors are neighbors. In order to promote goodwill towards its neighbors, MCNR works to create a milieu that not only supports the resident but also supports their family in the community. MCNR seeks to participate in programs that facilitate health and well being, improve independence and build social accountability. Following are MCNR's key program accomplishments for the 2018 fiscal year. I. Resident support and nutrition: Resident nutrition is enhanced by participation in this program, and it also provides a comfortable setting for visiting with family. During this past fiscal year, over 828 meals were prepared for visitors. MCNR's meal production cost for visitor meals was $7,041 with $2,500 collected from visitors for their meals. Additionally, during the current fiscal year MCRN transitioned to electronic medical records. This transition enables seamless integration of resident care across all aspects of our facility. II. MCNR community support and outreach: (1) MCNR employees, visitors and residents have supported numerous community services and events, including many listed below. Support includes ongoing donation of goods and service time to multiple organizations listed below. - Access Agency Emergency Shelter of Willimantic and Danielson - State of CT Social Services Emergency Services - The Holy Family Shelter - No Freeze Willimantic - Teeg Senior Outreach - Tri Town Shelter of Vernon - City of Norwich No Freeze Shelter - Hawkins House - Battered Women Safe Houses of Northeastern CT - Home Bound Veterans - Willimantic Soup Kitchen - Town of Ashford Food Program - Department of Family and Children Resources (2) MCNR participated in several community outreach programs during the year, including the following: - Winding River Senior Housing - Provided program information - Coventry Senior Center - Provided program information - Tolland Senior Center - Provided program information - Ashford Senior Center - Provided program information - Mansfield Senior Center - Provided program information - MCNR Family Council/Community Outreach - Providing Medicare Part D Navigator direction, assistance (3) MCNR supports students in their healthcare education and clinical rotations. As a healthcare provider, MCNR supports local schools and universities to help develop, support, and educate healthcare students from many disciplines by providing a facility orientation and clinical access in order to provide a comprehensive clinical experience. MCNR provides conference rooms, educational materials, equipment, and expertise of our own staff to enhance the student's experience. In addition, MCNR provides 'nurse shadowing' opportunities for local high schools for students who are considering a career path in nursing. MCNR affiliated schools include: University of Connecticut, Norwich Tech, Yale School of Nursing, and Seton Hall. Students in nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, gerontology, family studies and therapeutic recreation, speech therapy and audiology programs participate in various supportive activities. (4) MCNR also participated in additional community outreach activities, including: - Mansfield Mobile Library - Books for residents and monthly presentations - UConn Honor Society - A partnership to provide opportunities for community volunteerism - UConn Generations Connect - Student and resident programming - UConn Fraternities and Sororities - Work with Therapeutic Recreation staff - UConn Center for Community Outreach - Therapeutic inter-generational programming for residents - Fieldwork site for UConn Human Development and Family Studies students - EO Smith High School - Student job shadowing in health care - Occupations and completion of senior projects at MCNR - UConn Nursing Association - Anne E.
