About

The CitySprouts mission is to cultivate wonder for all children with hands-on learning through urban gardening. Since 2001, CitySprouts has been partnering with public elementary and middle schools in Boston and Cambridge to open the door to hands-on science education through the schoolyard learning garden. Our in-school and out-of-school time programs reach thousands of children from preschool through middle school years to level the learning field for children growing up in economically stressed neighborhoods, for English language learners and for students with differing abilities. Of our 21 school partners, 80% are Title 1 schools. Our model is based on the power of the schoolyard garden to engage children in deep and authentic science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning through the natural world where they live, learn and play. During the school day, the garden provides fertile ground for children to plan and carry out investigations. They learn to use both simple and complex technology to find answers to their own questions about the natural world. From their experiences in the garden, children build math skills and engineer solutions to solve real world problems. From the first spark of curiosity when a kindergartner enters the learning garden to an 8th grader who is heading into their young adult life with new STEM opportunities before them, CitySprouts' garden pipeline in school and out-of-school keeps children motivated to learn and engaged in the world around them. CitySprouts supplements its in-school program with bridges to children's lives out of school as well. CitySprouts' family engagement for school families supports and enhances young students' science education with family events in the garden and material developed specifically for 'playing and learning' together. Our tuition-free summer and after school program for 11-14 year olds creates a community for young people to learn about their natural environment, engage in science and engineering through ecosystems and food systems, and explore their emerging identity as young adults. Since our program began, we have seen over and over again that CitySprouts' impact is higher for children with little or no access to nature where they live. Parents, teachers, and other school educators consistently report that CitySprouts levels the learning field for children not served by traditional education methods and for those with few out-of-school time educational options. Since the organization's inception in 2001, CitySprouts' guiding principle of equity and its youth-driven approach have shaped its program development and positively contributed to the field of informal education in-school and out-of-school. CitySprouts was selected as a social innovator in 2008 by the Social Innovation Forum in Boston. CitySprouts is a charter member of the BPS Opportunity Portfolio, a key strategy for the district to identify and increase equitable access to quality learning opportunities. In 2016 CitySprouts became a charter member of the BOSTEM Education, Innovation & Research Project, a federally funded program designed to improve youth STEM learning and social-emotional health. Founding Director Jane Hirschi's book, Ripe for Change: Garden-Based Learning in Schools (Harvard Education Press, April 2015) has received praise from environmentalists as well as educators. Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, writes, 'Ripe for Change is a powerful tool to enhance learning that every school should utilize.'
