About

In 1985, P. Leo Corcoran, a partner in the real estate firm John M. Corcoran & Company, founded Caritas Communities, a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization. Concerned about the rising number of homeless people, including working people unable to afford decent housing, Mr. Corcoran and the original board of directors adopted the lodging house model as an efficient and affordable means of providing quality accommodations at an affordable rent. From the beginning, Caritas has focused its efforts on preventing homelessness and stabilizing neighborhoods by providing affordable housing for people who can't make a living wage. Caritas purchased its first property in 1985, and now owns 33 buildings throughout Greater Boston communities with 919 units. In 2018, Caritas made significant strides in serving the neediest citizens of Greater Boston: - Housing: We maintain and manage housing for 875 economically disadvantaged individuals in Greater Boston. - South Boston Projects: We continued construction on 206 West Broadway, which will begin leasing in 2019, and closed on the O'Connor Way project, which will provide affordable, supportive housing to 47 low income seniors. - Tenancy Preservation: We assist residents in arrearage with referral to budget education, rental - Assistance Programs, and support with accountability. - Resident Services: We have 3 full time resident service coordinators and contract with specialized veteran's case management providers to help our veteran population. - Homelessness Prevention Program: We provide emergency rental assistance grants to residents who experience a temporary financial hardship. - Welcome Basket Program: We provide home and hygiene essentials to residents at move in to provide dignity in the transition to housing from homelessness. - Healthy Residents Program: Community meals, art and writing workshops, exercise and wellness programs for residents.
