Reach Out and Read, Inc.

Mission

Reach Out and Read gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. Our objective is to improve emergent literacy and social-emotional health during the span of rapid brain development between birth and age five, particularly in economically disadvantaged families who are at risk for adverse outcomes. We do this by partnering with pediatric medical providers who encourage parents to read aloud regularly with their children, and provide the knowledge and tools families need to nurture early learning, providing the best start for their children. Families served by Reach Out and Read read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills.

9 Mile Project

Mission

The 9 Mile Project is a 501(c)(3) organization which fundraises and donates money to support boarding school education for high school students living in rural Rwanda. The boarding schools are federally funded, however, their tuition fees are $120 per semester, which are unaffordable for many families living in rural Rwanda. The 9 Mile Project chooses qualifying students to financially support throughout their high school education to ensure they are able to pay the $120 tuition bill each semester. The common alternative for these students is either to not attend high school or walk up to 9 miles a day to attend regional high schools which do not have running water, proper school materials, consistent electricity, or food. However, the federal boarding schools provide three meals a day, running water, electricity, formal housing, technology, and a high quality education. These students are driven to get a higher education and deserve our help in doing so.
