Mission

North Brooklyn Parks Alliance works with the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, elected officials, and our community to maintain, activate, enhance, and expand parks and public spaces in North Brooklyn.

About

Open Space Alliance advanced efforts to create new parkland in Brooklyn's Community Board 1, including securing funding and launching the design development of a new park underneath the Kosciuszko Bridge. Dedicating resources to the creation of a 'Friends of BQGreen,' including design and execution of marketing materials and the organization of a community block party, Open Space Alliance advocated for the creation of BQGreen - an innovative design concept to deck over a portion of the BQE in the southside of Williamsburg to connect disparate parcels of parkland on either side of the expressway. OSA also supported ongoing parks maintenance and programming throughout the district, including resurfacing the asphalt areas of Sternberg Park; purchasing a mobile trailer that could easily transport supplies and materials for volunteer and community maintenance and beautification projects; organizing beautification activities at Cooper Park; creating a sports and play equipment library at William Sheridan Playground; and sponsoring a public art project, Ziemia, in McGolrick Park. OSA acts as a service organization to smaller parks organizations, nurturing local stewardship and community engagement through friends groups. In 2018, OSA provided administrative and programmatic support for eight distinct friends groups; offered digital services to create a website, e-commerce capability and branding for Friends of Cooper Park and Friends of William Sheridan Playground; and designed and purchased marketing materials for the volunteer groups.
