About
The program involves inmates of a local prison refurbishing and recycling computers that are donated by local corporations and government agencies. These computers are then sold at discounted prices or gifted to schools, teachers, not-for-profit organizations and disadvantaged youth throughout Minnesota. Minnesota Computers for Schools (MCFS) improves student success by transforming computer technology to provide greater educational opportunities for students in Minnesota. During 2018, Minnesota Computers for Schools was able to place 2,252 systems in Minnesota. MCFS also provides a workforce development program. The workforce development program employed 42 inmates at Stillwater Correctional Facility and taught them transferable, on-the-job technology skills. In 2018 we taught 309 students computer recycling, refurbishing skills, Cisco IT essentials certification, CompTIA IT fundamentals and A+ preparation and computer programming in game and web design through the MCFS Core:IT workforce training classes at the Emerge ECTC and Cedar Riverside Plaza classrooms, Neighborhood House, Minneapolis Urban League and Humboldt High School. 174 students received certificates in 2018.
