Mission

To inform the public about railroad photography and art through education, research, publications, and exhibitions, and to serve as a forum for the national community of railroad photographers and artists.

About

The center publishes a quarterly journal, Railroad Heritage, that uses photographs and art to inform the public about the railroad's influence on economic growth and development, popular culture, and the lives of the hundreds of thousands of men and women who built, operate and maintain North America's railroads. Occasional books add to this message, including a new title for 2018, Beebe & Clegg: Their Enduring Photographic Legacy, which examines the lives and photography of Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg. They helped establish the railroad book genre with many successful and highly-publicized titles in the 1930s to 1950s. An initial pressrun of 700 copies sold out in four months, leading quickly to a second printing. The center is preparing a new book for 2019, drawing from its collections, about the photography of J. Parker Lamb. As noted above, the center also partnered with Indiana University Press on a new book about Wallace W. Abbey in 2018 and transcontinental railroads in 2019.
