AboutMSP 2018 990 PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTSMAIN STREET PROJECT (MSP) HAS SUCCESSFULLY PROTOTYPED OUR MODEL PRODUCTION UNITS - POULTRY COOPS SURROUNDED BY WELL MANAGED 1 ACRE PERENNIAL PADDOCKS - AND HAS DEVELOPED LOCAL AND NATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS AND INNOVATIVE DE-RISKING AND FINANCING INITIATIVES TO ACCELERATE ON-FARM REPLICATION AND CAPITAL INVESTMENT IN SE MINNESOTA. WE HAVE TRAINED MORE THAN 80 LATINX AGRIPRENEURS SINCE 2014. OUR MODEL PRODUCES REAL TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE IMPACTS, IS ACCESSIBLE TO BEGINNING AND IMMIGRANT FARMERS, AND IS SCALABLE. -IN 2018 WE PROVIDED TRAINING AND MARKETING SUPPORT FOR SIX ADVANCED LATINX TRAINEES. AFTER ALL EXPENSES, AGRIPRENEURS NETTED BETWEEN $3200 AND $5700 PER FLOCK. -WE ALSO LAUNCHED TWO LATINA INDEPENDENT PRODUCERS FROM OUR PROGRAM AND HELPED SECURE FIRST EVER OPERATING LOANS FROM A NEW REGIONAL GROW A FARMER FUND.WE CONTINUED FIRST PHASE ESTABLISHMENT OF OUR 100-ACRE FARM, TRANSITIONING FROM CONVENTIONAL TO ORGANIC PERENNIAL AND POULTRY PRODUCTION, AND SYSTEMS RESEARCH, DEMONSTRATION AND TRAINING. ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDED:-ESTABLISHING A COMMUNITY AREA OF THE FARM INCLUDING AN ORCHARD, POLYCULTURES, LAND-SHARE PROGRAM AND DEMONSTRATION GARDEN FOR MULTI-GENERATIONAL FAMILIES;-WORKING WITH 250 COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO HARVEST OVER 7,000 LBS OF FRESH, CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE FOOD AT NO COST;-EXPANDING OUR BI-LINGUAL TRAINING PROGRAMS AND CURRICULA TO INCLUDE VEGETABLE PRODUCTION, ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT AND PERENNIAL CROPS. -INSTALLING A 22-ACRE AGROFORESTRY DEMONSTRATION FIELD;-PLANTING THREE ACRES OF CASH CROPS INCLUDING ASPARAGUS AND GARLIC;-HOSTING MORE THAN 1200 VISITORS INCLUDING ORGANIZED TOURS BY EDUCATORS, FIELD EXPERTS, SCIENTISTS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND FARMERS INTERESTED IN OUR MODEL;-SECURING SUPPORT FROM NEW DONORS TO FINANCE THE FARM BUILD OUT. WE DEVELOPED INNOVATIVE DE-RISKING STRATEGIES FOR BEGINNING AND TRANSITIONING FARMERS-- INCLUDING FINANCING, LAND ACCESS, PERENNIAL PLANT MATERIAL. ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDED:-ESTABLISHING PERENNIAL NURSERIES TO PROVIDE FREE OR LOW-COST WOODY PERENNIAL PLANT MATERIAL (HAZELNUTS, ELDERBERRIES) TO REDUCE THE COST OF TRANSITION TO PARTICIPATING FARMERS;-PILOTING FLEXIBLE LAND-USE EASEMENTS WITH DAKOTA COUNTY TO ENCOURAGE GROWTH OF DEEP-ROOTED PERENNIAL SMALL GRAINS ON MARGINAL LANDS;-CREATING INNOVATIVE FINANCING AND LAND ACCESS MECHANISMS FOR FARMERS LIKE OURS WHO RESTORE SOIL QUALITY AND GENERATE OTHER TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE BENEFITS; AND-PROVIDING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, TRAINING, DEMONSTRATION AND SUPPORT FOR FARMERS USING OUR MODEL. WE ESTABLISHED THE PARTNERSHIPS NEEDED FOR REGIONAL EXPANSION WITH KEY NONPROFIT, FOR-PROFIT, GOVERNMENT AND INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERS, INCLUDING:-SHARED CAPITAL COOPERATIVE, A CDFI WORKING TO SUPPORT LATINX FARMERS THROUGH DEVELOPMENT OF A POOL OF OPERATING LOANS FOR MSP-MODEL COOP CONSTRUCTION, AND COLLABORATING WITH MSP ON STRUCTURING A GROWER'S COOPERATIVE;-LIFT ECONOMY, WHICH IS COLLABORATING WITH MSP ON DEVELOPMENT OF REGIONAL BUSINESS MODELING, COOPERATIVE GOVERNANCE/OWNERSHIP STRUCTURING, AND FRANCHISING/REPLICATION EXPANSION STRATEGIES; AND-IROQUOIS VALLEY FARMS, WHICH PROVIDES FARMER-FRIENDLY MORTGAGE FINANCING TO BEGINNING ORGANIC FARMERS SEEKING LAND ACCESS.
