Mission

Pact, An Adoption Alliance, provides the highest quality adoption services to children of color. Our primary client is the child. In order to serve the child, we address the needs of all the child's parents. We advise families facing a crisis pregnancy and we offer lifelong education to adoptive families and birth families on matters of race and adoption. Our goal is for every child to feel wanted honored and loved, a cherished member of a strong family with proud connections to the rich cultural heritage that is his or her birthright.

About

Pact Camp - By popular demand, Pact Family Camp expandeda second camp is now offered on the East Coast, making the Pact Camp experience accessible to more families and spreading the Pact ethos on a national level. Pact Family Camp is a five-day immersive experience for families with adopted or fostered children of color, as well as non-adopted siblings, extended family members, first/birth parents and siblings, and adult adoptees and foster alums. This year, 2019, Camp West was full to capacity with 109 families as is Camp East with 86 families. As word-of-mouth spreads about the Pact Camp experience, interest continues to groweach year, more people want to attend than we have capacity to serve. Pacts board and staff have spent a great deal of time doing our best to create an equitable process that allows as many families as possible to attend Camp. For 2019, the board continued to focus on four areas of equity it considered important; we want to share with you the results. Expanding first/birth parent presence at camp: To accomplish this goal, we recruited new attendees and speakers and made a special effort to include fathers. We are proud to say at Camp East, we will welcome 5 first parents as well as one birth sibling and include a birth father in the programing for the first time. We continue to be the only Camp we know of that is intentional about birth family involvement in our program; in 2019, we welcome 10 birth parents as well as 9 birth siblings who attended with their adoptive siblings and parents at Camp West and 5 birth parents who attended Camp East. Ensuring supportive learning spaces for both white transracial adopters and POC-headed families at camp: Pact Family Camp is for adopted children of color and their families; some of those are transracial adoptive families and some are not. We are committed to meeting the needs of bothwith a clear understanding that parents of color have been traditionally under-served in the adoption community. We offered a discount for POC-headed families to attend Camp with the goal that they represent about 1/3 of attendees and this year some Camp East families provided us with additional dollars to subsidize an additional five POC-headed families to attend in Georgia. We accomplished our goal of at least 30% of attending families being POC-headed at both Camps, this is the first year we have attained this goal at Camp East! Ensuring that Pact Camp is open to families from diverse socio-economic groups: We are delighted to report that we were able to lower the fees for the lowest income-level families, offer scholarships to more than 50 families across Pact Family Camp West and East, and increase the number of low- and middle-income families (under $125k/year income) from 34% in 2017 to 56% in 2019, an increase of almost 65% over 2017. Ensuring that we bring new children and their families to camp yearly: So many families have told us that their first visit to Pact Camp was transformativethe catalyst for life-altering changes in their perspectives, their priorities, their relationships. It is essential that we reach children and families who deserve and need that experience. 25% of the families attending Camp were new to Pact Family Camp in 2019. Demographics of Families and Youth Servedo Racial Demographics of Youth at Camp: 72% African American, 12% Latino, 8% Asian, 1% Native American, 7% White (siblings) - racial demographics include biracial youtho Types of Families: 31% families with parents of color, 28% families with LGBTQ parents, 17% families with single parento Type of Adoption: 51% Domestic Private, 32% Foster Adoption, 17% International Adoptiono Age of Youth: 22% Littles (0 to 5), 33% Middles (6 to 9), 23% Tweens (10-12), 18% Teens (13-17), 3% CITs (18-20)Pact Family Camp is a victim of its own successwe can no longer accommodate all the families who would like to attend. Moving forward, we will continue the lottery system for Camp West, so we can continue to serve new as well as returning families.
