About
THE SYMPHONY HAS THREE MAIN SERIES OF PERFORMANCES: MASTERWORKS, POPS, AND CHAMBER MUSIC. THE MASTERWORK SERIES IS DEVOTED TO PERFORMANCES OF THE GREATEST ORCHESTRAL WORKS COMPOSED OVER THE PAST FOUR CENTURIES. POPS FEATURES THE ORCHESTRA IN A LESS FORMAL SETTING AND IS FOCUSED MORE ON LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT AND FAMILY FRIENDLY PROGRAMMING. THE CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES FEATURES CSO CORE MUSICIANS IN MORE INTIMATE SETTINGS PERFORMING THE WORLD'S GREATEST CHAMBER MUSIC REPERTOIRE.BOTH THE MASTERWORKS AND THE POPS SERIES SAW AN OVERALL INCREASE IN ATTENDANCE AS THE SYMPHONY ROLLED OUT A MORE FLEXIBLE "PICK SIX" SUBSCRIPTION PACKAGE WHICH ALLOWED PATRONS TO CURATE THEIR OWN SERIES BASED ON PERSONAL TASTES AND SCHEDULES. MASTERWORKS PROGRAMMING, LED BY MUSIC DIRECTOR KEN LAM, FEATURED AUDIENCE FAVORITES SUCH AS BEETHOVEN'S FIFTH SYMPHONY AND RACHMANINOFF'S SECOND PIANO CONCERTO AS WELL AS MORE EXPLORATORY WORKS THAT INCLUDED A WORLD PREMIERE OF YIORGOS VASSILANDONAKIS'S OBOE CONCERTO AND MICHAEL DAUGHERTY'S EXOTIC TIMPANI CONCERTO, RAISE THE ROOF. BOTH CONCERTI WERE PERFORMED BY CHARLESTON SYMPHONY PRINCIPAL MUSICIANS WHICH SHOWCASED THE IMMENSE TALENT THAT THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY HAS AMONGST ITS TWENTY-FOUR CORE MUSICIANS. UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF YUIRY BEKKER, THE POPS SERIES CONTINUED TO ENTERTAIN AUDIENCES AND ENGAGE THE CHARLESTON COMMUNITY. WITH GENRE BENDING PERFORMANCE SUCH AS A TRIBUTE TO LOUIS AND ELLA AND AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 MINUTES, BEKKER WORKED TO TIE IN COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS TO MAKE THE POPS SERIES ACCESSIBLE TO THE BROADEST POSSIBLE AUDIENCE AND SERVE IN MANY CASES AS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY. THIS PAST SEASON, BEKKER INVITED CHARLESTON RESIDENT AND LATIN PERCUSSIONIST, GINO CASTILLO, CHARLESTON TAIKO DRUMMERS, AND MANY OTHERS TO SHARE THE STAGE WITH THE SYMPHONY.
