NextGen Leadership Academy Program Service Accomplishments: 2018January 15, 2018: Martin Luther King Service for Peace on Jan 15. Our first years, second year interns and staff all participated in a clean-up of Oakland city streets. Full day of service working with local schools and volunteers and Council member Noel Gallo, district 4. Total of NGA participants were 9.Jan 26-29, 2018: Communication Workshop. New styled communication workshop by Sam Orman; Gene Hunnycutt and Eric and Colette. Opened to public. Noted as best Communication workshop.Jan 18- Feb 2018: 8 Momentum Presentations. (NGA core staff plus ten volunteers) JFK High school-75 students; Bay Tech, American High and Argonaut. Momentum serves schools by breaking down social barriers-we get students talking to other students-listening to others they never listen to. Momentum builds understanding and new relationships. A real response to fear and bullying - depression & violence. Momentum also gives opportunity for leadership-speaking in front of others-inspiring others by sharing deeply and listening empathically.March 20- April 3, 2018: International Service Projects: South Korea. 7 participants spent 2 weeks serving and touring South Korea. Service projects in Seoul: Orphanage and Soup Kitchen. April 13-16, 2018: Family Workshop; (15 total participants). First year participants and second year interns brought moms dads and siblings to an NGA style workshop. Powerful and moving experience for all. Intention-create environment for open and honest communication-listen with empathy and understanding. Outstanding success.June 21-July 15; Ignite 5-Day Training and Summer Challenge (10 participants) 10 NGA staff. Ignite is a 5-day experiential leadership outdoor adventure camp. Participants are challenged to take ownership of their lives. They gain tools for practicing effective communication & leadership skills. They build confidence and support for resolving personal issues. Powerful experience for staff and participants. Summer Challenge is where the participants go on a 3 week road trip that has challenging workshops, service work and great outdoor experiences.September 11; No NGA full year. Hana Lei Evans arrives for our revamping of NGA Momentum. Daniel Mizutani arrives Oct. 1 followed by Sam Orman. A very productive time clarifying and practicing Momentum program. Very useful having Sam Orman and team. Successful revamping of Momentum.November 28 ; Momentum: JFK High School); Limited NGA. No full year staff or first years. 3 NGA alumni-Sam Orman, Hana Lei Evans and Daniel Mizutani served as group leaders and room leaders for a powerful one full day assembly. Outstanding success. Students and staff experience making a difference in someone's life. Momentum creates compassionate community in schools.
